NONPROFIT
OUR MISSION
914UNITED Inc. emerged in 2020 to serve on the forefront of advocating for the youth and the formlery incarcerated residing within the Lower-Hudson Valley. We champion the philosophy that it takes a village to raise a child and a team to achieve success. In this spirit, we deliver a team of seasoned role models whose genuine dedication and community value lies in supporting and mentoring those living within at-risk environments. Our aim is to assist youth in successfully transitioning into adulthood and provide returning citizens with essential support to sustain productive living.

OUR WORK, OUR VISION
914United Inc. presents the Leaders Build Leaders Initiative. This initiative includes interactive, seminar-based programs such as manhood training, financial literacy, civic engagement, & women empowerment. As an incentive, it provides internships in various professions as well as gift sponsorships from local establishments and community organizations--proffering committed participants free services to personal care, entertainment, adventures, and more. In addition, we have a team of Reentry Mentors - who returned from incarceration leading to successful lives - dedicated to providing guidance to the Justice-involved. We envision a society where positive mentors offset negative environmental influences; where the underprivileged communities receive the institutional and community support in navigating life challenges; where retributive justice no longer exist.
OUR VALUES
Inspired by the belief that we must help one another, we value the role of community support in uplifting those in need. No greater value exists than caring for the less fortunate. It is with the mindset of WE that build communities and improve the welfare of the people.

THE CO-FOUNDER & DIRECTOR
PROFESSIONAL & PASSIONATE

A dedicated community servant, Jonathan Alvarez is a Youth Advocate and Community Activist in the City of Yonkers. He’s a 32-year-old life-long Yonkers resident who promotes the philosophy that change agents, change narratives. After serving a 13-year prison term, he returned home with a mission to give back to the same community he once negatively impacted. He is motivated by his transformative experiences within the criminal justice system. At age 17, he went away with a tenth-grade education. During his incarceration, however, he acquired a GED and later achieved a Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies from the Bard Prison Initiative program. His educational journey and personal metamorphosis have inspired him to be a productive contribution to society.

DEDICATED & DETERMINED
John Cabrera is a life-long Yonkers resident who cares for community and for those in need. His drive to serve others stems from an understanding of family support. During his adolescent years, he nearly spiraled down the wrong path by flirting with the street life and consequently experiencing a overnight stay at the city jail for a low-level crime. But friends and family steered him in the right direction. He completed High School and moved on to study Business Management at Monroe College and then transitioned into Mechanical Engineering at Manhattan College. Due to the birth of his first child, John had to leave school to take care of his family. His crutch during this pivotal moment - beside family - was the church. It was at this time that he adopted the Christian faith more devotedly than ever and experienced the true meaning of giving back. He volunteered his time in the capacity of Young Adult and Outreach Leader at Harvest Fields Community Church, conducting community outreach to the youth and the homelessness.

Thank you to National Digital Inclusion Alliance for recommending 914United Co-founder & Director, Jonathan Alvarez, to be a panelist on the national stage, hosted by NTIA, to discuss his digital equity work with the justice involved and Reentry population in the Lower Hudson Valley. We are so honored to witness this important conversation being elevated and the all support behind such a powerful initiative.
-
We would be remiss to not acknowledge our valuable partners in this work, Stem Alliance, who recruited 914United to be a host organization in the Yonkers community. It is together that we are able to close the digital divide that disadvantages the formerly incarcerated population. And we will continue working side by side.

We continue to join the leadership in changing narratives. Thank you Westchester Community Foundation for awarding 914United with a $25,000 grant to support criminal justice reform.
We will be helping young adults exiting Westchester County Department of Correction plan for their education through a Reentry Peer Mentorship Initiative and a partnership with Peter Green. Our program will assist returning citizens with the transition back into society by providing access to educational and employment opportunities and mentorship for the reintegration process.
Congrats to all the other nonprofits who receive grants as well, including Westhab Inc., Release Aging People in Prison, Finding Peace Within, CLUSTER, Youth Shelter of Westchester & the Center of Court Innovation. Our efforts will help our justice-involved youth with a successful transition.

914United kicks off Women’s History Month with our Women’s Leadership Initiative with a new community partner.
The fundamental belief of (WLI) is that women need to look within themselves, assess who they are and what their purpose is, and work towards creating their destinies - rather than allowing their lives to "happen to" them.
-
This is a mentorship program geared toward assisting & uplifting young girls & adult women along their life journeys. This initiative is led by strong women who are successful in their respective industries – from real estate, business, finance, politics, education to nursing. It’s seminar-based curriculum adheres to three core values: inform, inspire, & influence.
-
The first workshop was amazing - as we modeled it after “speed mentorship,” a spin-off of “speed dating” to get to know our participants. We are excited to continue this program for the next 6 weeks and develop a long-standing relationship with our community sisters.
-
If you are interested in joining us as a mentee or as a person seeking guidance in any form, please feel free to reach out!

Executive Director Jonathan Alvarez ( @j.o._envisioned ) visited Portland, Oregon to attend the 2022 Net Digital Inclusion Alliance conference as a panelist for Digital Equity, Corrections System, and Returning Citizens. As a partner with @thestemalliance, he spoke as a practitioner in the field and from his lived experiences - highlighting the core issues surrounding digital inclusion programming for criminal justice involved and prison reentry populations.
Alvarez recognizes the specific needs when serving clients and it’s our job to raise that awareness on a national level

That is WHY the voices of the justice involved is so vital in this work #netinclusion2022
